Maa Behen review: Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga power a messy but watchable Netflix dark comedy about family, gossip and a dead body panic.

What this rating means: Watchable or selective; works best for the right audience. Rating guide

Quick verdict: Maa Behen is a bold, noisy and sometimes overstuffed Netflix dark comedy that works best when Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga are allowed to be messy together. The film has sharp ideas about gossip, patriarchy and women being judged, but its comic rhythm is not always as clean as its premise.

Maa Behen review: what works

The biggest strength of Maa Behen is its central trio. Madhuri Dixit plays Rekha as a woman who has spent years being judged by her colony, her family and everyone who thinks a woman should behave in one approved way. She gives the film its swagger, especially in scenes where Rekha refuses to be ashamed of herself.

Triptii Dimri gives Jaya a different energy. Jaya is tired, trapped and angry in a quieter way, which makes her panic feel believable once the dead-body situation begins. Dharna Durga, as Sushma, adds the younger, impulsive spark. Together, the three women make the film watchable even when the screenplay gets too busy.

The film also has a strong hook. A mother and her estranged daughters trying to handle a body inside a nosy neighbourhood is exactly the kind of premise that can produce dark humour, family fights and social commentary at the same time. When the film lets that panic play out naturally, it is fun.

Where the film becomes uneven

Maa Behen does not always trust its own madness. It wants to be a farce, a feminist satire, a family reconciliation drama and a crime comedy together. That ambition gives the film flavour, but it also makes the pacing feel stretched in patches.

Some jokes land because the characters are taking absurd situations seriously. Others feel pushed too hard. The film is at its best when the women are improvising under pressure. It is weaker when it stops to explain its point too directly or adds one more complication when the scene already has enough chaos.

Performances

Madhuri Dixit is the obvious centre of attraction, and she carries Rekha with charm, defiance and a knowingly dramatic screen presence. The role allows her to be funny without turning Rekha into a joke.

Triptii Dimri is strong as Jaya because she plays frustration without making it one-note. Dharna Durga brings confidence to a difficult debut space, where she has to stand beside two more familiar faces. Ravi Kishan gives Gupta Ji the right mix of comic menace and neighbourhood absurdity, while Geetanjali Kulkarni and the supporting cast help the colony feel like a place where every secret can become public property.

Is Maa Behen worth watching on Netflix?

Yes, if you enjoy dark comedies that are more interested in character mess than perfect plotting. Maa Behen is not a smooth ride, but it has enough personality to avoid becoming another forgettable streaming film.

The film may frustrate viewers who want a tight crime comedy from start to finish. It is more useful to approach it as a messy women-led dramedy with a sharp premise, a few loud swings and several good performance moments.

Final verdict

Maa Behen is a mixed but engaging Netflix watch. The writing is uneven, the runtime could have been tighter, and the comedy does not land every time. Still, the central performances, the dark family setup and the film’s interest in how society polices women make it worth a stream.
