What is 23 000 Lives about?
The story follows a group of young people who refuse to remain passive as refugees die while crossing the Mediterranean. Despite having no experience in sea rescue, they launch a crowdfunding campaign, buy an old ship and begin their own rescue missions.
Their work saves more than 23,000 lives, but the mission also forces the group to confront difficult questions about responsibility, law and justice. Netflix presents the film as a serious drama about how individual action can grow into something far larger than anyone initially imagined.
Is 23 000 Lives based on a true story?
Yes. The film is inspired by the true story of Jugend Rettet, a group of young people who raised money to purchase a rescue ship and save refugees in the Mediterranean. Netflix’s official production announcement says the organisation’s work helped save more than 23,000 people.
The film turns that real humanitarian effort into a drama about hope, courage and the pressure that follows when moral conviction collides with legal and political realities.
Who is in the 23 000 Lives cast?
Louis Hofmann, Mala Emde and Katharina Stark lead the cast. The film also features Frederick Lau, Maria Dragus, Trevor Magaya, Kathy Etoa, Luisa-Céline Gaffron, Saibon Wang and Eleonora Romandini.

Markus Goller directs the film. Oliver Ziegenbalg wrote the screenplay in collaboration with Michele Cinque. Netflix also credits Oscar winners Christian Goldbeck for production design and Volker Bertelmann for the music.
Should 23 000 Lives be on your Netflix watchlist?
23 000 Lives is aimed at viewers looking for a grounded drama rather than a conventional rescue thriller. The hook is not only the danger at sea, but also the question at the centre of the trailer: how much can one person, or one small group, really change?
If you prefer true-story films about humanitarian action, civic courage and the consequences of challenging an established system, this is one of Netflix’s more serious releases of the week. For a full watch-or-skip verdict, read our 23 000 Lives review.
