The Last Sunrise Review: Sunlit Chemistry, Shallow Drama

The Last Sunrise review: sweet chemistry and Mallorca scenery meet thin conflict and rushed emotion. Bingebaaz rating: 2.5/5.

Verdict
2.5/5

What this rating means: Mixed; mainly for viewers already interested in the genre, cast or subject. Rating guide

The Last Sunrise has the glow of a perfect holiday romance, but too little dramatic heat beneath it. Maia Reficco and Fernando Lindez make the central relationship easy to watch, while Eva Longoria gives the film its most grounded tension. Yet the screenplay repeatedly trades emotional depth for tidy melodrama, leaving its health, family and business conflicts feeling thinner than the Mallorca scenery deserves. Rating: 2.5/5.

Quick verdict: A glossy, sincere summer romance carried by appealing performances, but weakened by underwritten conflict and emotions that rarely have time to settle. Watch it for the chemistry and scenery, not for a fresh romantic drama.

What is The Last Sunrise about?

Oriah “Ry” Pera is a college student whose chronic illness has made caution part of everyday life. A summer in Mallorca with her protective mother, Isolde, offers a temporary escape. There she meets Julián, a local whose spontaneity pushes her to imagine a life shaped by her own choices rather than by fear.

The romance soon collides with a second story. Isolde’s company has plans that threaten Julián’s family interests, placing Ry between the person who has protected her and the person encouraging her independence. The setup has enough tension for an intimate romantic drama, even before buried family truths and Ry’s medical decisions enter the picture.

Maia Reficco gives the romance a pulse

Reficco is the film’s clearest strength. She gives Ry vulnerability without reducing her to an illness, and her lighter scenes with Lindez have an unforced warmth. Their attraction feels believable because the performances are relaxed rather than overly polished. When the film pauses long enough to let them talk, tease or simply enjoy Mallorca, it becomes the appealing summer romance promised by the trailer.

Lindez brings charm and physical ease to Julián, but the writing asks him to function more as an invitation to freedom than as a fully developed person. He is most effective opposite Reficco; away from her, the family and financial pressures around him are sketched too quickly to carry much weight.

Eva Longoria finds the film’s most interesting conflict

The mother-daughter relationship gives The Last Sunrise a stronger emotional foundation than its business subplot. Longoria does not play Isolde as a simple obstacle. Her protectiveness comes from love and fear, while Ry’s frustration comes from wanting a life that belongs to her. Both positions are understandable, which makes their quieter disagreements more compelling than the larger twists surrounding them.

Longoria and Reficco are strongest when the film treats care and control as two sides of the same bond. Unfortunately, the screenplay often rushes toward its next revelation before the tension can deepen. The result is a relationship with real emotional potential that is repeatedly interrupted by plot mechanics.

Beautiful Mallorca, thin dramatic texture

The production has an obvious postcard appeal. Blue water, warm light and old streets create the right mood for a romance built around a finite summer. The film looks inviting, and that visual ease helps its 106-minute runtime move quickly.

But attractive scenery cannot supply stakes on its own. The conflict involving Isolde’s company and Julián’s family is explained more often than it is made tangible. Important choices arrive, arguments flare and secrets surface, yet the story rarely gives those developments enough space to change how we understand the characters.

That is the central frustration. A chronic illness, a difficult medical choice, a protective parent and a threatened family livelihood could create a layered drama about autonomy and limited time. Instead, the adaptation frequently reaches for a clean emotional beat before earning it. The film remains sincere, but sincerity cannot fully disguise how familiar and underwritten its turns are.

Should you watch The Last Sunrise?

Watch it if you enjoy glossy young-adult romances, scenic European settings and book adaptations led by attractive, likeable performers. Reficco, Lindez and Longoria make it an easy Prime Video watch.

Skip it if you want the health, family and class conflicts to receive the same attention as the romance. The film gestures toward difficult ideas but resolves too much through familiar melodrama.

Final verdict

The Last Sunrise earns 2.5/5. Its leads create a sweet, watchable romance, and the mother-daughter story hints at something more affecting. But thin conflict, rushed emotional turns and familiar melodrama keep this beautiful summer escape from becoming memorable.
