The cast of Lovesick turns one romantic triangle into a much larger argument about freedom, family and revolution. Renata Vaca leads Netflix’s Mexican period series as Emilia Sauri, with Juan Pablo Fuentes and Iván Amozurrutia playing the two men whose ideas about love pull her towards very different futures. Renata Vaca plays Emilia Sauri
Emilia is the centre of Lovesick, originally titled Mal de amores. She is intelligent, curious and determined to study medicine at a time when that ambition puts her in direct conflict with social expectations. Her story is not simply about choosing between two men. It is about deciding whether either relationship can leave room for her vocation and independence.
Vaca has to hold several forces together: Emilia’s attachment to her childhood, her impatience with the limits placed on women and her fascination with medicine. That makes Emilia the point where the series’ romantic, family and revolutionary stories meet.
Juan Pablo Fuentes plays Daniel Cuenca
Daniel is Emilia’s childhood love and the more restless half of the central triangle. Raised around liberal ideas, he commits himself to the revolutionary cause and repeatedly places political action ahead of personal stability. His disappearances and returns keep Emilia tied to a shared past even as she tries to build a future of her own.
Daniel’s relationship with Emilia is powered by familiarity and conviction, but it also exposes their central conflict. He wants to transform the country; she refuses to let that transformation leave her own ambitions behind.
Iván Amozurrutia plays Antonio Zavalza
Antonio is a doctor who returns to Puebla believing his skills will be needed as conflict approaches. Where Daniel is drawn towards armed struggle, Antonio looks for a way to help from inside medicine. That gives him an immediate connection with Emilia’s professional dream as well as her romantic life.
Antonio represents steadiness, education and companionship in science, but the series does not make him a simple safe choice. Loving Emilia also means accepting that her freedom cannot be negotiated away for comfort.
The Sauri family gives Emilia room to imagine another life
Miguel Rodarte plays Diego Sauri, Emilia’s father and the owner of the apothecary where she first develops her knowledge of medicinal plants. His liberal outlook helps create a home in which her curiosity can grow, even when the wider society is not ready to recognise her as a doctor.
Diana Bovio plays Emilia’s mother, Josefa Veytia. Josefa is more measured than the most openly rebellious members of the family, but she supports her daughter’s independence. Cassandra Ciangherotti plays Josefa’s sister, Milagros Veytia, whose refusal to organise her life around a conventional marriage gives Emilia an older example of female autonomy.
The Cuencas connect medicine to revolution
Humberto Zurita plays Doctor Cuenca, Daniel’s father and a longtime friend of the Sauri family. He recognises Emilia’s aptitude and quietly shares medical knowledge with her. Alejandro Puente plays Daniel’s older brother Salvador, who also cares about Mexico’s political future but approaches the struggle with a steadier temperament.
The Cuenca family therefore pulls Emilia in two directions at once. Daniel embodies revolutionary movement, while his father gives practical shape to her medical calling. Her connection to the family is emotional, political and professional.
Milagros and Rivadeneira offer another model of love
Juan Pablo Medina plays Rivadeneira, an intellectual attached to the liberal circle around the Sauri family. He loves Milagros while respecting her refusal to enter a conventional marriage. Their relationship quietly echoes the question at the heart of Emilia’s story: can devotion exist without possession?
Sofía Carrera completes the principal ensemble as Sol, Emilia’s childhood friend. Sol comes from a more traditional world, yet her loyalty to Emilia survives their different expectations. Her connection with Salvador brings the younger generation of both families together beyond the central triangle.
