East of Eden Cast Guide: Cathy, Adam, Charles, Cal and Aron

Meet the East of Eden cast and follow Cathy, Adam, Charles, Cal and Aron through the Trask family’s two-generation conflict.

Quick answer: Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, Christopher Abbott is Adam Trask, and Mike Faist is Charles Trask in Netflix’s East of Eden. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders play the next-generation Trask brothers, Cal and Aron. The nine principal names below matter because this is not one household frozen in time. It is a family story built to rhyme across two generations.

The Trask family map before you meet the cast

The easiest way into this ensemble is to read the Trasks in two rows. Cyrus is the father of Adam and Charles. Adam later becomes the father of twins Cal and Aron. That makes Adam the hinge between two brother pairings, not simply one of several leads.

Cathy is the disruptive line cutting through that family tree. Netflix describes her life as intertwined with Adam and Charles, then frames the larger saga around what families hand down. The casting therefore has a deliberate echo: Abbott and Faist carry the first brother conflict, while Zada and Anders inherit its emotional shape in the next generation.

The Hamiltons run alongside the Trasks rather than beneath them. Samuel Hamilton brings a settler’s knowledge of California’s Salinas Valley, while Lee and Faye widen the story beyond blood relations. Think of them as the people who reveal what the Trasks cannot see when they look only at one another.

Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames

Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, the character Netflix calls the series’ scheming antihero. She is the cast guide’s starting point because the new adaptation does not treat her as a late-arriving complication. Her story is braided through the Trask generations, with Adam and Charles singled out as the two men whose lives become notably entangled with hers.

Cathy also carries the show’s central question about choice. Zoe Kazan has said she wanted to preserve the character from Steinbeck’s novel while unfolding her as a person rather than leaving her as an archetype. That puts more weight on Pugh than the simple label of villain would suggest. Cathy remains dangerous, but the series is interested in how she understands the evil she sees around her and the darkness she brings into other lives.

Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask

Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, Cyrus’s son and Charles’s half-brother. Adam occupies the bridge position in the family saga. He begins inside one bitter brother relationship and later becomes the father at the centre of another, which is why understanding him unlocks both halves of the cast.

Adam’s connection to Cathy turns the early family conflict into a generational one. The story does not leave the damage with Adam and Charles. It carries that inheritance forward to Cal and Aron, making Abbott’s character the person through whom the series can test whether a family is doomed to repeat itself.

Mike Faist as Charles Trask

Mike Faist plays Charles Trask, Adam’s half-brother and the other son raised under Cyrus. Charles is not a side branch of Adam’s story. He is one half of the first brother pairing, where paternal approval, resentment and competition establish the pattern that the younger generation will inherit.

Netflix specifically places Cathy’s life alongside both Adam and Charles, so Faist’s role belongs inside the central triangle rather than in a separate family subplot. That overlap is the first major conflict layer to watch: Cyrus shapes the brothers’ rivalry, then Cathy changes its stakes.

Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask

Tracy Letts plays Cyrus Trask, father to Adam and Charles. Deadline describes Cyrus as a self-proclaimed Civil War hero whose first wife was Adam’s mother and whose second wife was Charles’s mother. That family history explains why the brothers are connected by blood but not positioned as simple mirror images.

Cyrus is the first source of the Trask pattern. His treatment of his sons turns love and approval into things to compete for. By the time Cal and Aron arrive, the question is no longer whether the family has a brother problem. It is whether the next pair can escape the emotional rules established above them.

Joseph Zada as Cal and Joe Anders as Aron

Joseph Zada plays Cal Trask and Joe Anders plays Aron Trask, Adam’s twin sons. Cal is the role James Dean played in Elia Kazan’s 1955 film, but the Netflix limited series is structured to cover a much broader stretch of Steinbeck’s novel. Here, Cal and Aron are not the entire story. They are the second movement of it.

The twins form the clearest generational echo in the ensemble. Adam and Charles establish one Cain-and-Abel-shaped rivalry; Cal and Aron replay the pressure of brotherhood under a father whose own childhood was marked by the same struggle. Zada and Anders therefore have to make the repetition feel like inheritance rather than duplication.

Cal carries the James Dean connection, but Aron is essential to understanding why Cal’s choices carry such force. One brother cannot embody rivalry alone. The tension comes from how each son understands goodness, love and their father’s approval differently.

Hoon Lee as Lee

Hoon Lee plays Lee, a Chinese American man whom Netflix describes through two qualities: formidable intelligence and a deep capacity to care for people who need it. In an ensemble full of men struggling to speak honestly about affection, that combination gives Lee a distinct story function.

Lee matters because care is not passive in this family. It can interrupt isolation, interpret what others refuse to say and give the younger generation a relationship that is not built on competition. His place in the Trask orbit offers a counterweight to the inheritance of rivalry.

Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton

Ciarán Hinds plays Samuel Hamilton, an Irishman who settles in California, raises a family and learns the land. Samuel is the clearest bridge to the Hamilton half of the saga, keeping East of Eden from shrinking into a single-family melodrama.

His presence creates another kind of contrast. The Trasks keep turning inward, measuring love and worth within the family. Samuel brings an outward-looking relationship to community, work and the Salinas Valley. That makes him useful not only as a Hamilton patriarch but as a point of perspective on the Trasks.

Martha Plimpton as Faye

Martha Plimpton plays Faye, a brothel owner whose open heart may become her weakness. That short official description already separates her from the Trask men. Faye’s power comes with generosity rather than inheritance, and the risk is that someone else will recognise how to use it.

Faye gives the adult story a second centre of control outside the Trask home. Her presence also sharpens the series’ larger argument about choice: kindness can leave a person exposed, but manipulation is still a decision made by the person who exploits it.

The two conflict layers to keep straight

First comes inherited competition. Cyrus, Adam and Charles establish a family system in which sons measure themselves through a father’s approval. Cathy then moves through the brothers’ lives and turns an old rivalry into a much larger fracture.

Then comes repetition with a chance to change. Adam becomes father to Cal and Aron, and the younger brothers face the same emotional trap from a new position. Lee, Samuel and Faye matter around that core because they show other ways people can form bonds: through care, friendship, community or generosity rather than blood and competition.

That is the useful way to read this cast. Pugh is the disruptive force, Abbott is the generational hinge, Faist is the first brotherly counterweight, and Zada and Anders carry the echo. Letts, Lee, Hinds and Plimpton make sure the saga has fathers, guides and chosen connections beyond its central rivalry.

East of Eden is a seven-episode limited series that starts streaming on Netflix on October 1. Our East of Eden Netflix release guide has the batch-release details and official trailer. Our book, film and Netflix comparison shows how this ensemble reaches beyond the section adapted in 1955. The date is the easy part. The cast map is what will help once the story begins jumping between generations.
