In a post-release interview with The Indian Express, Shahi Kabir said Shelly had already learned the non-murder explanation from Kottayam Nazeer’s character: Keerthana died after falling from a train, while an astrologer had fabricated the conspiracy around her death.
That revelation ruins Shelly’s original plan. He wanted to solve a sensational crime and turn it into the screenplay that could launch his film career. Once Shelly learns that there was no murder to solve, his original plan to extract a screenplay from the investigation falls apart.

Shelly’s apparent triumph is also the film’s tragedy. Kabir says pressure at home and work causes a mental breakdown that, within the story, develops into schizophrenia. He says Shelly then imagines material from what he has seen and heard and shapes it into the story of Unmadham.
The film links writer’s block with Shelly’s loss of contact with reality, but this is its portrayal of one fictional character, not a general claim about schizophrenia. Shelly is not rewarded for detective work; the screenplay emerges from his imagined version of a death that, according to Kabir, was not a murder.
What does the title Unmadham mean?
Unmadham means “frenzy,” and the title points inward. The frightening file, the lizards, the nightmares and the apparent ghost story are less about a cursed police station than the chaos gathering inside Shelly.
The earlier Manichitrathazhu discussion can be read as a clue to that design. Shelly is shown taking cues from films, so one plausible reading is that his imagined ending borrows familiar supernatural grammar when the non-murder explanation fails to give him a thriller.
The final answer
Keerthana died in a train fall, not in the murder conspiracy shown later. In Kabir’s explanation, Shelly does not uncover a real killer, and the ghost-led discovery belongs to the story Shelly imagines from what he has seen and heard.
